Tips on how to make extra income while staying home with your sweeties

Making the decision to stay at home to care for your family does not have to mean that you will never earn an extra "dollar".  Yes, for most of us it usually means sacrifices and being very intentional about spending and saving, but it doesn't have to mean you can never help out financially and add to the household income.  I love staying at home (and I'm SO grateful for the opportunity to do so), but let's be honest here, I miss getting a pay check ; )

I am not reinventing the wheel here, it just requires a little thinking outside of the box.  Just because you have chosen (or are thinking of going in that direction) to avoid a 9-5er, doesn't mean you have to be the "penniless princess".  I just wanted to suggest some ideas that maybe some of my fellow stay-at-home moms haven't thought of.  Here are a few ideas that might spark an opportunity for you to earn some extra pocket cash:

1. De-clutter:
You know the saying, "one man's junk is another man's treasure".  Sell items that you don't want or need on Craigslist, eBay or have a good ole' fashion garage sale.  You would be amazed at what people may be looking for!  This is a great way to to down size, which means less time and energy spent on maintaining stuff.

2. Put your talents to work:
Do you have any special skills that could be earning you some extra cash?!

My undergraduate degree is in Spanish and I am bilingual.  Therefore, on occasion, I am able to translate documents for companies and organizations right from my own home.

Are you a cleaning or organizational fanatic?  Why not help someone who may be a bit domestically  challenged or who is short on time?  P.S. could you add me to your list ; ) ?!  Can you iron?  I know someone who pays a lady to iron their clothes.  Maybe you haven't used your cosmetology or salon talents in awhile.  Photography skills?  Wedding planner?  Video editor? Writer - maybe it's time to write that book/ebook ?!  Dog walker? Cat sitter? Cake decorator? Knitter? Seamstress?

Starting a small business is easier than you think...not to mention the flexibility and the write offs that come with it.

3. Learn a new skill and get paid for it:
I have always enjoyed working out and going to the gym.  Several years ago, I had the realization that I could actually be getting paid to do this?!  I took a certification course in group fitness and began teaching classes (aerobics, spinning, cardio-kickboxing, etc).  I was paid to show up and work out (a good incentive to show up for class).  For an added benefit, we never had to pay for gym memberships because I was on staff.  Woo hoo! I look forward to starting this again soon!

4. Tutor:
Do you have above average ability or knowledge in an academic area? Are you a Math whiz? English major? I have had the opportunity over the years to do private and group Spanish tutoring and lessons.  This is a fun way to meet new people, earn some extra cash and help someone improve in an area in which they need a little help. Put your smarts to work and help a struggling student!

5. Put your artistic ability to work:
Are you blessed in the arts?  Maybe you can sell your crafty work on Etsy or eBay?!  Have you thought about offering private or group music lessons?  Voice lessons?

6. Nanny or babysitting:
This is not limited to high school students.  Many working parents would like their children to be in a home environment (maybe someone they already know and has children) who can care for their children before and/or after school or during the day.  We have recently began doing this ourselves.  A friend of mine is working a few hours outside of the home each week, and her daughter comes to our house once a week.  My girls love the extra new face around and another "student" during our school time. It is working well for everyone involved.

7. Maximize your time online:
Maybe it's time you started that blog and shared your wisdom with others online?!  There are possibilities to earn money by having your own blog. You may have also read my posts about earning online "digital dollars" by searching through Swagbucks.  It really couldn't get any easier. (If you are new to this idea, read here.)

Let's also not forget about Ebates.  The place to go if you shop online.  Once again, I'm not telling you to spend money to earn money, but if you buy staple items (ink, diapers, photos, etc.) or do regular shopping online (birthdays, Christmas, clothing) then you could be earning rebates for doing just that.

8. Become a consultant:
There are so many businesses out there that you can become a consultant for.  Their specialty is helping you to help them, which helps you and them ; ) You know what I'm talking about.... Pampered Chef, Arbonne, Tastefully Simple, Premier Designs Jewelry, etc.  There are so many to choose from. I would suggest doing this not out of pure drive for extra money, but for your belief in a product.  If you are passionate about a product, why not promote it! I have seem many women become successful at these and have a blast doing it.

In summary, the opportunities and ideas are endless.  It just takes a little creative thinking and some passion to come up with ways to earn some extra cash while being home with your precious little ones.  I hope this has helped motivate you to use your gifts and talents to possibly help fill your family's piggy bank.

Do you have any creative ideas for us stay at home/work from home mommies?  Please share! : )

Earth Day freebies {Frugal Friday}

April 22nd is Earth Day. For me, I like to be reminded of the awesome planet we have and all that we have been given. We definitely have not "arrived" in this area, but we try to make an effort not to be wasteful with resources - whether it be natural resources, money, etc.

We are trying the best we know how to teach our girls to reduce, reuse and recycle and to be mindful of being resourceful.

Here are a few fun and free ways to do this in your home, as well:

Starfall is an interactive website with a lot of free activities and games (most of which are educational). They have a cute one, called Earth Day, that allows your child to clean up a park by placing the trash in the appropriate bins - recycling or trash.

Michaels is offering this free Earth Day craft on Sunday.

Ebates: more money earning tips

Honestly, today my house needs some serious attention, so I was going to forego my "Frugal Friday" post in an attempt to find the floor {wink}. Then I received a very timely email (since it is "Frugal Friday") that I had a $40.20 check on the way from using Ebates to shop online. So, I thought I would share this little secret with you.

Actually, it's not really a secret. Thousands of people take advantage of this opportunity, but in case you don't know...I'm telling you.

Ebates is a site that pays you back for shopping online. Since I'm trying to help you save/earn money, I'm obviously not telling you to go spend money to earn money. I'm simply giving you another way that you can earn cash back for doing what you already do.

If there are items that you currently buy online or if you do birthday and/or holiday shopping online, Ebates is a way to do that and earn cash back for your purchases.

There are hundreds of retailers found on the site. Often, there are deals where the stores will give you double cash back. I've earned as much as 20% cash back for purchases.

I won't list stores, but some of the items I have purchased are photo books, shoes, items for homeschooling, books, etc.

It's free to join and you can sign up by clicking here. I hope you will take advantage of this little tip.

How to increase your Swagbucks earnings {Frugal Fridays}

So a few weeks ago I talked about the Swagbucks phenomenon. This is where searching the internet earns you digital bucks.

Today, for "Frugal Friday", I want to share two more tips on how to increase your Swagbucks so that you can cash them in for free stuff.

Sign up for an account
:: On the Swagbucks homepage, you can sign up for a free account. You will earn Swagbucks just for doing this. You can click here to do this.

Search, search, search!
:: As I mentioned last week, you can set the Swagbucks site as your homepage. Therefore, whenever you go online, you can earn by going to the sites that you normally go to. Simply type the name of the website, topic, or social media page that you go to in the search bar.

Next week, I will give two more tips on earning more Swagbucks.

P.S. I got my free stuff in the mail this week that I ordered using my Amazon gift cards "bought" with Swagbucks. That's always fun : )

Happy Swagbucking!

How to increase your Swagbucks earnings {Frugal Fridays}

So a few weeks ago I talked about the Swagbucks phenomenon. Where searching the internet earns you digital bucks.

Today, I want to share two of the many tips on how to increase your Swagbucks so that you can cash them in for free stuff.

In fact, I have two items on their way to my house that I ordered this week with Amazon gift cards that I got by cashing in my Swagbucks. I ordered a book from my 2012 book list and a CD for the girls.

If you are frustrated or you don't understand how to earn digital dollars, here are a few tips:

Reset your homepage
:: Set the Swagbucks site as your homepage on your computer so that you
are reminded to do all of your searches through the site, which will increase
your earnings.

Daily polls
:: Take the "daily polls" on the Swagbucks site to earn 1 Swagbuck every day. Hey,
that's 30 "bucks" a month for answering one question per day.

The idea here is not to spend more of your time trying to get something for free. After all, time is money. It's about doing the things that you most likely do everyday and benefiting from it. I want to be a good steward of all that God has blessed me with...time, finances, etc. Swagbucks is one way to do that.

(Side note - I earned 11 Swagbucks while searching something for this post. woot woot!)

Have you cashed in your Swagbucks lately? What are some ways you have found that have earned you the most "bucks"?

Slimming down for the New Year

Each Friday, in honor of "Frugal Friday", I plan to post some tidbits about being frugal and saving money in various aspects of life. As I stated in another area of the blog, if there were an 11th Commandment, I'm pretty convinced it would be "Thou shall not pay full price for anything". {insert laugh}

Since we have just entered a new year, the time when many people vow to make changes for the good including slimming down the wasteline, I thought it would be helpful to give tips to get all of us thinking on how we can slim down our expenses. Isn't it a good thing to constantly reevaluate where those hard earned dollars are going?!?

There are probably several ways we all could save money in order to be able to save more, give more and manage less stuff.

Here are a few tips to get you thinking:
  • Cable/bundle packages - TV (one of the biggest time stealers we have), do you need all of the channels that you actually pay for? What about something like Netflix where you can pick and choose when and what to watch. Or even more radically....what about no TV this year?!
  • Landline telephones - can you forego the landline and just use cell phones if you have them?
  • Cell phone plans - do you use all of the minutes and messaging you pay for each month?
  • Memberships - are you regularly paying for memberships that you are not taking advantage of; gyms, clubs? Can you work out it home or just enjoy the great outdoors this year?
  • Insurance - are you getting the best deal to protect your cars, home, family, and possessions? Shop around.
  • Fees - are you paying fees for services you can get for free? Bank accounts, late fees, annual credit card fees. There is a lot of competition out there and most likely you can get the same or similar service for cheaper or for free.
I've found one thing that really challenges me is to dig a little deeper than the surface and actually reevaluate perspective. What is necessity, really? Unfortunately, our American culture thrives on bigger, better, faster, stronger and newer. The things we sometimes think we cannot live without are luxuries that most people around the world will never possess in a lifetime.

Do you plan to slim down in 2012? If so, share some of your tips with us.
